I-Am-Bored Goes Indie: Don't Call It A Comeback!
Submitted by: fancylad⚫ 1 year ago
Dear I-A-B readers,
Fancylad here. By the time you read this, I’ll be dead.
Kidding. If you’re reading this, it means I-A-B is back.
What happened? A brief history of the last few months: Sometime around March, Demand Media (I-A-B’s former parent company) announced they were going to put I-A-B on auto-pilot and see if anyone was interested in buying it. If no one was interested, the plan was to pull the plug. No more I-A-B.
After talking to J-Dog (O.G. readers will remember J-Dog — I-A-B’s long-running general manager during its salad days), we decided to try and pull our financial resources together. The asking price was high — 401Ks were drained, personal savings accounts were withdrawn from, but we looped in I-A-B’s original developer and tech hero Sunny and made it happen.
Long story short, we pooled our resources to buy I-A-B and return it to its former glory. On top of that, the improvements you’ve all been asking for are happening: The return of chat, faster page loads, less ads (already happened — we’re at 50 percent of where the site was a month ago), sweet profile pages, improved community tools — trust me, there’s a long working list of improvements we’re going to tackle.
When will you see the improvements?
First off, I-A-B will return to new content seven days a week as of today. As for the site features, Sunny is furiously tapping his fingers against his keyboard as you read this. As the aforementioned new products launch, I”ll announce them here and on our social media pages. I promise, you’ll be the first to know.
So why take the gamble? I can’t speak for J-Dog or Sunny, but for me, I truly love and believe in I-A-B. Next to my summer’s spent as a Raging Waters lifeguard, managing this site is the best gig I’ve ever had. I really felt that at its peak, I-A-B brought together the smartest community online, in spite of some of the memes were responsible for. (What up, Boxxy?)
I think that’s it for now. I’ll give you more info in forthcoming posts when things happen (and new, big things are literally happening every day — Sunny showed me what he’s developing and it brought tears to this bitter misanthrope”s eyes). I just wanted to get you all up to speed, and to thank all of you for sticking around and/or coming back. This site is mine as much as its yours — any website can be successful and groundbreaking, but it’s the community that sets I-A-B apart from all other sites.
So if you like something you see — a news article, a photo compilation, this post — share it with your friends on the social media platforms of your choice. I-A-B is gonna need all the help it can get these first couple of months — we’re working on a shoestring budget over here, but I promise you we’ll get to where we should have been years ago.
