Sulu Will Be Gay In The Next Star Trek And George Takei Is Upset About It

News is out that Simon Pegg, co-writer of the forthcoming Star Trek installment, has confirmed that Hikaru Sulu (played by John Cho) will have a male partner and George Takei isn't cool with the "tribute."

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Takei said, "I'm delighted that there's a gay character. Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene's creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate."

He added that when he first learned last year, from Cho, that Sulu would be revealed as gay, he tried to convince the writers to create a new gay character instead.

"I told him, 'Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.'"

Good point on George's part. The whole "Sulu's gay now!" storyline seems tacked on, and because George's gay, it seems disingenuous.

really? who cares? Star trek died when JJ Abrams was handed the reins, just like how Star Wars died. Star Wars and Star Trek are now just a vehicle for politically correctness and the love for money. Might as well bring in a Captain who is a pink-winged unicorn that sleeps on a rainbow, and who has the ability to transform their sex organs to male and female at will, and even have both if they want. After all, politically correct is about pleasing all people, and to hell with Aesop's story of the farmer and his donkey saying you can't. (which btw is why hollywood sucks so much these days!)

I suppose this isn't too horrible an idea, after all " Sulu " is japanese for " I swallow "

I think George playing Sulu's father would be cool. Other main actors have played multiple parts in the show with no problems, Machelle Barret Rodenberry played many main characters such as #1, Mress, nurse Chaple,Troy's mother, voice for the computer etc. for example. So why not George?

Majel Barrett belonged under this comment. I hope IAB sorts itself out soon and gives us an edit button

Have to say, have enjoyed this thread. George has the right idea, respect Gene's vision.

Sulu's daughter could also be a surrogatewith Sulu as the father donor, an adopted daughter or even the OTl (Original Time Line) Sulu might have been living in the closet. If Baron Harkonen can have a daughter (Lady Jessica, Paul's Mother in Dune) Why not Sulu?

I've known a number of gay people with kids (their own, biologically); they came out later in life, after having children.

gay people can adopt, can they not?

Brent Spiner cameo as Dr. Sung would also be cool. Maybe indroducing the his next generation of Synthic Human, one of which we saw in Star Trek Into Darkness. A very early version of B-4.

I also would have liked to have seen a movie about Capt. Sulu and the Excelsior or a movie about the crew of Enterprise C. We only get glimpses of these two in TNG or the movies.

Kirk was already established as a womanizer in the new movies as well as TOS, and TAS so I doubt making him Gay would work. I mean We are introduced to Kirk's lusts in Star Trek as banging 2 Tailed alien women at the same time shortly before making a pass at Uhura. No matter how you slice them that takes balls.

Be bold and go where no man has gone before: make Kirk gay. Show Kirk getting it on with all manner of alien men with different coloured skin.

I personally like that idea if for no other reason than the irony it would create between now and his TOS behavior. But that's Imaterial because they are making Sulu gay. I'm sure a gay Kirk would have been too much for the Hollywood studios to swallow. They want a money maker and a gay lead in this series would be too risky for them. P.S having George do a cameo would be awesome.

I do NOT mean to say that all people who love guns, swords, physical fitness, swashbuckeling movies and books are gay, These are just what we know about Sulu's interests, what I am saying is Sulu's sexuality is unknown in TOS.

Sulu having a history of being hetro? Sulu's sexuality was never touched upon in TOS. We do learn however Sulu loved guns, swords, physical fitness, swashbuckeling movies and books, But his sexual preferences were never mentioned unlike characters as Spock, Kirk, Bones and to some extent Checkov. So it is possible he might have been gay in TOS, but we will never know. I do however agree it does seem disingenuous that Sulu is suddenly gay because George is. I agree with @Gerry1of1 that having George and Walter on as cameos is a great idea.

Sulu has a daughter in the movies, the pilot of the Enterprise-B.

Sulu's hobbies are antique weapons and botony. We know from the movies he had a daughter who became helmsman of the Enterprise B. The only reference to his sexuality is 'Mirror, Mirror' where Sulu actively pursues lustful activities with Uhura.

Wait, I mean Spock had a time ship, that's why he's there. Sulu still wouldn't be. My bad, too many beers

OK I forgot about his daughter in the movies. :-O. In Naked Time Sulu quotes several lines from 3 Musketeers while using a foil (Being a swashbuckler) so he has at least east a fan of such material. Mirror Sulu may or may not had the same sexual interests as Sulu.

True, Kira Nerys' mirror double went both ways leaning to women but Kira didn't..... that we know

While I agree that it seems tacked on and disingenuous, that is Hollywood's MO. So to give it legitimate consideration and tactful application would feel disingenuous.

George handled that with class I think. Basically saying "yes I am gay but the character does not have to be". I think they should give George a cameo as Sulu's father in the next film.

i dont like your idea of takei being chos father. it wouldnt seem right, they didnt make nimoy quintos father, they made it so that quinto would grow up to look exactly like nimoy, at least thats what i took away from it. so since nimoys original spock exists in the new alternate timeline, it would stand to reason that takeis original sulu also existed, therefore chos sulu would grow literally into takei. sure, i know a lot of people who grow up to look exactly like their parents, i myself look exactly like my father when he was my age, according to the one photograph he has from himself from that age. but still, it just wouldnt feel right. even in this alternate timeline, takei is still original sulu, he cant be chos sulus father, it doesnt make sense! time travel is stupid. these new star trek movies are stupid! thats it, im upset about the new stark trek movies! im going to start a riot! whos with me? you know what i change my mind, they arent that bad, at least not bad enough for me to start a riot over. stupid alternate timelines.

Spock was brought into the Abramverse by the romulans. Sulu was not so, no, an original time line Sulu would not exist
