Who In The Hell Is Milo Yiannopoulos And Why Do People Make Such A Big Deal About Him?

Submitted by: fancylad 1 week ago News & Politics

It was announced earlier this week that Bill Maher was going to have Milo Yiannopoulos on his weekly HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher. Once Yiannopoulos, people started voicing concerns and "The Intercept" co-founder Jeremy Scahill told show producers, 'Nope, I will not be on a panel with Yiannopoulos.' Scahill’s believes that the Yiannopoulos booking is because Maher is anti-Islamic.

Maher responded: "My comments on Islam have never veered into vitriol,” Maher replied in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “Liberals will continue to lose elections as long as they follow the example of people like Mr. Scahill whose views veer into fantasy and away from bedrock liberal principles like equality of women, respect for minorities, separation of religion and state, and free speech. If Mr. Yiannopoulos is indeed the monster Scahill claims — and he might be — nothing could serve the liberal cause better than having him exposed on Friday night."

I agree with Maher. I know nothing about this guy, who to me and my first impression, seems like all style and no substance. Can anyone explain why people are so repulsed by this guy?

UPDATED

Here's Scahill's announcement...

Today I saw the news that Milo Yiannopoulos is scheduled to be the lead guest on Friday’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. I was already scheduled to be a panelist on the program that same evening, along with Larry Wilmore and Jack Kingston. I have decided that I will not be appearing on the show. Before I explain my reasons for this, I want to say that I have had the pleasure of working as a correspondent for Real Time and over the years have been a guest or panelist many times. I have total admiration and respect for the producers, writers, and others who work on the show.

Over the past decade, the people at Real Time have become like family to me. I passionately disagree with—and find offensive— some of Bill’s views, particularly when his comments on Islam and Muslims veer into vitriol. At the same time, I have deep respect for Bill and his voice on many other issues and I believe he and his staff have created a vital platform for debate and discussion that at times I love and other times loathe. I know I fall into the latter category for some of the show’s viewers because I hear from them every time I appear. Whatever one might say about Bill, he always allows guests to challenge him or disagree with him.

But Milo Yiannopoulos is many bridges too far. He has ample venues to spew his hateful diatribes. There is no value in “debating” him. Appearing on Real Time will provide Yiannopoulos with a large, important platform to openly advocate his racist, anti-immigrant campaign. It will be exploited by Yiannopoulos in an attempt to legitimize his hateful agenda. Yiannopoulos’s appearance could also be used to incite violence against immigrants, transgender people, and others at a time when the Trump Administration is already seeking to formalize a war against some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Yiannopoulos has shown he will use his appearances to publicly attack and shame specific ordinary people by name, a practice which could lead to violence or even death. Real Time, of course, has the right to book whomever it wants on its show, including Yiannopoulos. But I cannot participate in an event that will give a platform to such a person. For these reasons, I have informed the producers of Real Time that I will not appear on the show.

Maybe Milo will once again bathe in pigs blood with pictures of dead soldiers, while making bad jokes in another awkwardly forced attempt at the Avant Garde.

Let him speak or "perform" enough and it probably won't be liberals asking him to shut up.

Who?  And what the hell is "The Intercept"?
You know, don't tell me. I don't give a shit anymore. it's all screeching and noise.

I don't think Milo is hateful. Certainly not at the level of the screeching like Madonna.

Let him talk I say, he has as much right to his views as anyone else. If he is an asshole then giving him a platform is really just giving him enough rope to hang himself.

It should be an epic show.  And if i could stand watching Maher more that 30 seconds without getting violently ill...i would be watching this confrontation.  It is nice to see how homophobic the left is getting, btw!

"My comments on Islam have never veered into vitriol,”

Of course not, that would be too obvious, but your non-verbal language speaks louder than your words.

Jumped on the hate bandwagon at just the right time. Heck, if history is anything to go by he might become president...

Milo is a fame whore, fraud, troll who stirs up bigotry and xenophobia without any regard for the real violence that he inadvertently helps create against Muslims, blacks and gays.

But banning him is not the answer. I say let him talk. That way people will see what an immoral, fact-less, idiot he really is.

markust123 Agreed (though I don't know about the fraud bit). There's no better way to combat his views than in the battle of ideas aka live debates like that.

mrsnowmeiser "though I don't know about the fraud bit"

Go back a few years and he doesn't resemble this person he is pretending to be. It's all a shock-talk act to gain as much attention as he can. He's really a Libertarian.

I've been going through YouTube and listening to this guy and he makes perfect sense so far and I haven't been privy to any "hateful diatribe."  To Mr. Scahill I would submit that you're one of many who deem anybody who doesn't agree with you as hateful.  To which I say, "suck it up buttercup."

He's everything the liberal-left hates: An uppity homosexual with a black partner who refuses to suck the Kool-Aid.

And the boycott just proves how terrified they are of him...
If he wasn't an immigrant (they hate that too, and his Jewishness most of all!) he could be President one day.

I have watched a few of his speeches and while I don't agree with everything he says I don't think he is nearly as inflammatory as everyone thinks he his.  He brings a pretty good counter argument to a lot of the common leftist talking points.  Most of what people know about him was the big snafu over a review he did of the new ghost busters movie(saying that Leslie Jones looked like a hot black guy).  The left really hates him because he is a gay, conservative Trump supporter with a fetish for black men.  They can't call him a racist or a homophobe, which seems to be their go to move for someone they disagree with.  The violent riot that happened at UC Berkley trying to get his speech shut down is a shinning example of the lefts current completely intolerant attitude towards any ideology that they don't agree with.  The tragic irony is that they were screaming that he was a fascist while being textbook fascist themselves.  I'm not trying to 100% defend him or all his talking points, but trying to silence or refuse to debate someone that you have opposing views with is extremely intolerant and cowardly.

starzokc The left are indeed like bunch of intolerant children who are able to dish out all of the filthy name calling that they spew forth from their little throats..However, they cannot handle it when someone like Milo comes along and makes too much sense for their brains to fathom. So the left resorts to what the left only knows how to do.......Throw a fit and cry until they get their way, I think it is like their defense mechanism..Milo doesn't sugar coat anything that he says and dishes it right back at them, and he gives them hell in the process... The left hates that shit....

starzokc They still DO call him a white supremacist, and a homophobe, and a lot of other dumb things! Lolz!
Like he's a 'Nazi' despite being of Jewish heritage. When will they learn about crying 'Wolf'?

5cats The mental gymnastics you would have to do to call a guy who dates black guys a white supremacist is beyond me.  Just shows how little of a counter argument they have for him.

It's too bad Bill Mahar is the one talking to him, instead of someone more willing to back up what they say. Time and time again I see him acting like he's a serious journalist going after someone, until he finds out he's wrong and then it's all, "I'm just a comedian. I was making a joke."

He never loses an argument, because he never has to admit he said something that he might have been wrong about. It's a cop out.

profworm It's a shame too, because he does 'allow' some serious 'conservative' voices on his show, and doesn't brow-beat them like so many other "hosts" do.

This (of course) drives the liberal-left guests insane with rage, their melt-downs make for EPIC comedy!! That is why they are pissing themselves with fear and refuse to be at a table with Milo. He will eat them alive.

But yeah, it seems he'll say anything for ratings, like Glen Beck :p And both of them are usually idiots...

profworm "I'm just a comedian. I was making a joke."

It's what's holding him back from becoming a serious political commentator. He's still a comedian with a news show.

Meh, the way to beat these people is to openly debate them.  His ideals are flawed and you have to meet them in academia.  That's where this needs to be debated.  We can't be afraid of their ideologies and not confront them.

The left hates him due to the fact he is openly gay and on the right (kinda). I don't agree with a lot of his opinions, yet that's the scary part seeing people on the left trying to shut him down. If he is not stirring up violence he should speak. Those who don't want to hear...um then don't listen.

Mikeman64 He's been known to direct his followers to harass specific people. He was kicked off twitter for it.

Also, being gay isn't a shield. He's hated for being a horrible person regardless of which nudie mag he subscribes to.

marsii "He's been known to direct his followers to harass specific people."

I know he's rude and plays the jerk and annoying as hell, but while I've heard people make this claim I've never seen anyone produce the actual tweets doing so.

The main reason the left hates him and labels him as 'hate speech' (i.e. anything they can't refute) is that he is a flaming homosexual that doesn't toe the party line.

megrendel The main reason the right likes him is that he is a racist and so are they: (sarcasm)

Does that sound right to you? So why do you start off saying you know why the left hates him? He's a troll and an irresponsible one at that: plenty of reason to disregard him as a terrible person. The only reason he gets press on the other hand is that he is a gay conservative. If he were a garden variety right wing troll and got no media attention for being gay he'd be ignored as he should be.

It takes quite a bit for twitter to ban someone btw (see Tila Tequila).

megrendel never heard of that guy. I dislike Milo from what I've read about him. First heard of him after he got kicked off twitter for having his followers harass the black member of the new ghost busters. Seemed like shitty behavior to me. He hasn't really done anything to redeem himself either so...he's a douche

marsii Did you see where he had 'his followers harass the black member of the new ghost busters' or did you just 'hear' that he had?

marsii  I dislike Milo from what I've read about him.

Ah, no first hand experience....just what you're heard (and I'm sure from exclusively properly-vetted, true-news leftist sources).

I've yet to see any tweet of his calling for his followers (or anyone) to harass Leslie Jones.  Nor have I heard where the harassment was exclusively by (or even mainly by) Milo followers.  I have heard MANY CLAIMS...but no actual evidence.  And everyone knows the left would never lie....

megrendel Read WaPo article on him, read a cnn article, read his tweets. Nobody had anything nice to say about him. What did you read? Brietbart? The closest thing to a nice thing I've read, including here is that he's irrelevant.

Do you have first hand experience with Edward Snowden? Did that prevent you from making a judgement? Anyway, it seems "the right" isn't capable of making informed arguments without mass generalizations about things they don't research. That might be the problem with "the right". Also they are all racist homophobes with a penchant for incest. Those crazy "the right".

marsii Just a few points here...1) I have noticed many people on the far left direct followers to do more than "harass" people.

2) Being anything is not a shield, but if you are not straight , of color or a member of certain left treasured beliefs and you dared not join the left movement, you are the lowest of the low in their eyes.

Mikeman64 Seeing a lot of "but their team did this" and not a lot of solid reasoning.

Same thing with you as megrendel but a bit more ignorant. You pretend to know what the left thinks but the real reason he is despised is that the media (conservative and liberal) both cover him because he's a rare gay conservative. Add his irresponsible and inflammatory behavior and you have an enigmatic homosexual troll who would get no attention or liberal scorn without any press coverage.

marsii We are saying what we SEE the left DO. We try to assign some reason to it, in order to attempt to understand. But usually there is NO reason, only hate.

And you haven't even seen or read Milo, I suggest you do. He's far from 'right wing' and makes many very concise and well reasoned arguments on a wide variety of subjects.

If the Alinsky-liberals think this sort of violence and censorship will stop him? They are truly ignorant.
